Riders, Refills and Research

How H2Origin removed single-use plastic from one of the North West’s most iconic charity cycling events without compromising on performance.

Project Overview

North West Cancer Research is the only independent charity dedicated to the North West’s cancer needs, funding pioneering research to tackle the cause, improve the care, and one day find the cure. Its Liverpool Chester Liverpool Bike Ride draws cyclists of all ages and abilities across Liverpool, the Wirral, and Chester. With thousands of riders on the road, hydration is a duty of care — and single-use plastic bottles weren’t the answer.

The Solution

H2Origin deploys two units across the route, each matched to the conditions it serves. At Neston, where rider flow is steadier, a compact unit delivers 80 litres of chilled, filtered water per hour. At the busier Upton stop, H2Origin’s mobile high-capacity station handles surges in rider traffic at 280 litres per hour without compromising water temperature. Clean water, on demand, with no plastic in sight.

The Result

Now in its second year, the partnership has removed the need for bottled water at both stops without compromising the rider experience, whilst raising the event’s sustainability credentials. H2Origin’s support also contributes directly to NWCR’s fundraising mission.

“H2Origin have been a key partner for the LCL Bike Ride for two years. Their involvement has enhanced both the sustainability and overall experience of the event — and beyond that, their support contributes directly to our mission. We’re proud to work with an organisation that genuinely shares our values.”

“As a fast-moving research centre, we needed a hydration solution that could meet not only the demands of a team of engineers, but also visitors to our site. The H2Origin Refills unit hasn’t missed a beat, providing sparkling, room temperature and chilled, clean, premium water whenever it is needed.”
